Artspace

Artspace Buffalo Lofts opened in July of 2007 to provide affordable housing and work space for artists and their families, and commercial space for arts organizations and arts-related businesses. The City of Buffalo engaged Artspace projects, Inc. to develop this new live/work project in the historic Breitweiser Printing Building on Main Street in Buffalo's Midtown neighborhood. The project consists of 60 live/work units: 36 in the Breitweiser plus 2 in new construction behind it. In addition, 9,000 square feet of commercial space on the street level of the Breitweiser Building provide offices and other space for arts organizations and arts-related businesses.

Art Dialogue Gallery/Western New York Artists' Group

This accessible and longstanding gallery has long been a great place to catch recent work by many Buffalo Niagara artists. There are usually at least twelve group or two/three-person shows per year at this elegant, but friendly art venue.

Bonus: if you need something professionally and creatively framed, check out the gallery's basement framing shop; it's one of the best in town.

Big Orbit Gallery

Big Orbit Gallery - Pluto's CaveFor a small gallery located on a quiet West Side street, Big Orbit hosts some very ambitious exhibitions and special projects. In recent years, a local sculptor built a house in the space; another time, an architect built a giant construction out of thousands of wooden pallets. With a solid mission of helping Buffalo Niagara artists present important projects, Big Orbit is one of Buffalo's most interesting spaces.

Big Orbit also runs an exciting experimental music venue, Soundlab, at 110 Pearl Street in downtown Buffalo.

Buffalo Arts Studio

Buffalo Arts Studio - William Y. CooperIn a classic reuse of a former industrial building, Buffalo Arts Studio provides studio spaces for over thirty-five artists as well as exhibition galleries and printmaking and ceramic studios. It is a great spot to meet local artists as well as to view and buy art. The handsomely-proportioned spaces even include a shop and a place to lounge.

Don't leave without visiting the ceramic studios, to see Buffalo's best potters at work.

Carnegie Art Center

This former Andrew Carnegie library is exploding with arts activities, from exhibitions to dance classes to writing workshops. Recently, the Carnegie has become renowned for specializing in experimental media exhibitions of artists from Buffalo Niagara and beyond. The facade may be nineteenth century, but the programming is up-to-the-minute.

After stopping in, check out the nearby Herschell Carrousel Museum, also in North Tonawanda.

CEPA Gallery

CEPA Gallery - Jaishri AbichandaniAn internationally-known center for cutting-edge photographic art, CEPA Gallery holds several ambitious exhibitions a year, as well as regular workshops in photography and digital technologies. Located in the historic Market Arcade building, CEPA utilizes three unique spaces for its thought-provoking installations.

Collectors' Gallery at the Albright-Knox

There are changing exhibitions of area and other artists here, as well as a wide selection of prints to buy or rent. Yes, that's right, you can rent to own an artwork. Many of the exhibitions feature works for sale by artists whose work can be found in a current exhibition elsewhere in the museum.

One of a series of Allen Street storefront galleries, College Street Gallery offers the charm of its bohemian Allentown setting as well as unique art offerings, often specializing in photography.

El Museo Francisco Oller Y Diego Rivera

A truly unique art space, El Museo specializes in the work of Hispanic artists and artists of color. Long-running traditions include its annual Day of the Dead exhibition, which in the past has been accompanied by a Samba festival. The gallery has recently undergone a cutting edge architectural renovation.

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center

Hallwalls-Megan BisbeeThis multi-disciplinary art space gets the credit for launching quite a number of international artistic careers. Known throughout the art world almost from its inception, Hallwalls was founded in 1975 by some ambitious Buffalo art students who included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Charles Clough, Michael Zwack, and others. After a series of location changes, Hallwalls is now settled in its most unique space ever: Babeville, a historic former church renovated by Ani DeFranco and Righteous Babe Records. Something is happening almost every night at Hallwalls, whether it's a film, a concert, or some other type of performance; and the new gallery spaces are fully scheduled.

This gorgeous new art venue is another Buffalo must-see.

Impact Artists Gallery

This TriMain Center Gallery is devoted almost exclusively to women artists, and also has an interesting focus on the use of art in psychotherapy. Impact also holds one of the few series featuring young women artists.

Insite Gallery

As part of Bryant Street Studio, Insite provides a unique Elmwood Village location for a regular exhibition series of area artists. This sleek well-designed gallery is part of a complex that includes a Buffalo Museum of Science satellite space and a spa.

Kenan Center Gallery

Kenan Art Center - Zora BuchananA venerable Lockport institution, the Kenan Center offers regular exhibitions of local artists, as well as interesting traveling exhibitions. In the past, the Kenan has hosted a national quilt show and an exhibition of political caricatures. The gallery is located in a beautiful nineteenth century mansion in historic Lockport.
