49. Asbury United Methodist Church
339 Delaware Avenue
Asbury United Methodist Church dates from 1876 and was designed by John Selkirk who came to Buffalo from Connecticut in 1825, the year the Erie Canal was completed. Selkirk had a long career in Buffalo as an architect and builder. In recent times, the church has fallen into disrepair. Tupper Street, adjacent to the church had to be closed to prevent injuries and property damage from falling masonry because the church tower was in such poor condition. The tower has since been shorn up and the church has been converted into a performance space and art gallery and also features office space for recording artist Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records and for Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center. It is a remarkable story of restoration and rebirth of that historic building.
