45. Sidway Building
775 Main Street
Designed in 1907 by McCreary, Wood, and Bradney, the Sidway Building was built on the site of Elbridge Spaulding’s mansion. Daughter Charlotte Spaulding inherited the site along with her husband Franklin Sidway. They decided to build an office and retail space here and hence we have the Sidway Building. The handsome exterior with its dark red brick and terracotta façade remains intact, however the interior was gutted during the recent conversion into apartments and lofts. Charlotte Spaulding Sidway also inherited River Lawn, her father’s 350 acre estate on Grand Island. In the 1930s, River Lawn was donated to New York State to become part of Beaver Island State Park.
