42. Hostelling International
667 Main Street
Hostelling International, 667 Main Street. This building was designed around 1900 by Green & Wicks for the William H. Clahey stores. At that time, there was electricity but the light bulbs available were very low in wattage so architects tried to maximize window space to allow plenty of sunshine inside as seen in the second and third floor windows. The building is designed in a Flemish-Renaissance style with picturesque parapets surrounding the gables on top. The parapets are the slight protrusions, in this case above the roofline and square on top. The building today houses Buffalo Hostel, where very affordable lodging is available. In 2006, Buffalo Hostel won an award. It was voted best hostel in North America according to a survey by Hostelworld.com, which features more than 10,000 hostels on its website.
