5 Things I love about Buffalo

This could be a super long list, but the first five that pop in my head are:

  1. The people
  2. The history
  3. The waterways
  4. The landscapes
  5. The selfless giving that keep this community together

My favorite local hidden treasures you shouldn’t miss

Breakfast at Tommy George’s in Lewiston, a single scoop at De Dee’s Dairy in Niagara Falls, hiking the Niagara Gorge, the Buffalo wings at Duff’s and a hot afternoon on Elmwood Avenue.

My perfect day spent in the Buffalo area

I love snooping around the classic buildings and century-old neighborhoods. The Ellicott Square Building is very cool. The old Warner Building on Franklin Street used to store movie reels being shipped across the country and it’s now D’Arcy McGee’s and Skybar! The studio that the Goo Goo Dolls own is near Delaware and North and sometimes Jim, the studio manager, will give tours. I love seeing all the old big-money houses along Delaware in Millionaire’s Row and Lincoln Parkway that have stories.

Have Captain Frank take you and a friend on a fishing trip along the lower Niagara River. Spend an afternoon at Beaver Island State Park -- on a hot summer day it’s the best. Make sure to stop at the Comic Book Cafe along the way.

Find Devil’s Hole State Park and take a hike down to the river. Walk up to the whirlpool or stay up on the walking path and make your way to the State Park at the Falls. It’s not summer until you have a cone from Twist of the Mist - the building is shaped like an ice cream cone. Does it get any better?

Fort Niagara has a massive outdoor Olympic pool and splash park in Youngstown. Check out the cool houses along River Road and make your way to the Niagara Falls Country Club at the top of the escarpment. It’s one of the best views in America!

Take a break from the malls and check out the clothing at Tony Walker & Company in Williamsville. Gadget and home entertainment fanatics will love the Stereo Advantage. Stop along the stores of Main Street in Williamsville and Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo for a cool mix of classic and eclectic stuff.

But my favorite days are spent visiting friends. You’ll find a lot of them here.
