Artists' workspaces are often situated in unusual locations. Such is the case with furniture designer Tom Stender whose studio is located in a complex of buildings in North Buffalo that was the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company. It is here that Stender creates his elegant, graceful and sometimes humorous furniture designs that have been honored with such prestigious awards as Best New Design at the Tokyo Design Show and Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, Museum of Architecture and Design. Perhaps his most famous design is a simple wave-shaped CD rack that he licensed for production in 1992 and has been distributed throughout the world since then. The curvilinear motif appears frequently in his designs such as Wave Goodbye, a console table constructed of curly maple that whimsically buckles/waves on one end visually propelling it forward while its thin legs sweep ever so slightly. Stender describes his limited (ranging from 5 – 100) edition studio furniture as “wittily romantic, narrative and sexy.”
